Ban on sales of MOUSE POISON
The ban on mouse poison in the Netherlands, effective July 1, 2023, has changed the way people control and repel mice. Fortunately, several effective alternative methods are available to control mice without resorting to poison. In this blog post, we've covered some of these methods:
1. Keeping mice out by sealing cracks and crevices is an essential preventative measure. Sealing potential entry points helps prevent mice from entering your home and reaching food sources.
2. Using traps is a traditional and effective way to kill mice. By strategically placing traps with attractive bait, you can catch and eliminate mice.
3. For those who prefer a humane approach, live traps are an option for capturing mice. After trapping, you can release the mice in a suitable location away from your home.
4. Glue traps can be used as a last resort. While this is a non-lethal method, you should be careful to minimize stress to the mice.
While the use of traditional poisons is no longer permitted for private use, a mouse poison based on alphachloralose remains available. It's important to use this poison with caution, as it sedates and puts the mice to sleep before they die from hypothermia.
It's essential to realize that controlling and repelling mice requires continuous effort. A combination of methods, such as sealing cracks and crevices, using traps, and regular cleaning, will help you maintain a mouse-free environment.
If you're dealing with a serious mouse infestation or if alternative methods aren't producing the desired results, it might be wise to seek professional help from a pest control company. These experts have the knowledge and experience to implement effective measures to control and repel mice without resorting to harmful poisons.
In this day and age, when the use of mouse poison is restricted, it's important that we become aware of alternative methods and take responsibility for dealing with mice in an environmentally and humane way. Let's work together to create a mouse-free environment for a healthier and more sustainable ecosystem.
Types of Mice
How do I get rid of mice?
There are several methods to repel or control mice:
- Keep mice away:
- Keep your house clean and tidy. Mice are attracted to food scraps and dirt.
- Fill holes and cracks in walls and floors with steel wool and caulk.
- Make sure there are no gaps in doors and windows and that they close properly.
- Store food in closed containers or boxes
- Combating mice:
- Mouse trap: Place mouse traps in areas where mice frequent. This could be near food scraps or along walls and baseboards. Use a snap trap or an electric trap, for example.
- Mouse bait stations: These are small boxes containing mouse poison. The mice eat the bait and then die. Place the bait stations in areas where mice frequent, but make sure children and pets can't reach them.
- Glue traps: Catch mice with glue. Note that mice don't die; you must use a humane method. (Do not burn or drown them.) Our knowledge base lists several effective humane methods for killing mice quickly and painlessly.
- Ultrasonic sound waves: Devices are available that emit ultrasonic sound waves that are supposed to deter mice. However, there is little evidence that these devices are effective.
It's important to remember that controlling mice can be an ongoing task, especially if there are many food sources near your home. Make sure you keep your home clean and tidy and seal any holes and cracks to prevent mice from entering.
